On 13th August 2025, we at Harshamitra Super Speciality Cancer Centre & Research Institute, Trichy, had the privilege of addressing the final-year B.Arch students of Marg Institute of Design and Architecture Swarnabhoomi (MIDAS).<\/div>\n
Our Managing Director, Dr. G. Govindaraj Vardhanan, led the session on \u201cThe New Era of Cancer Hospitals\u201d. This wasn\u2019t just a medical talk \u2014 it was an open conversation with young architects about how their designs can directly influence cancer care and recovery.<\/div>\n

Why We Spoke to Architects<\/h2>\n
At Harshamitra, we see every day how the environment affects healing. A cancer hospital isn\u2019t just a building with machines and beds \u2014 it\u2019s a place where patients fight for their lives, where families wait with hope, and where doctors and nurses work tirelessly.     Before a cancer hospital opens, several approvals and safety checks are needed. We walked the students through each one:<\/div>\n

    • Pollution Control Board Clearance \u2013 For safe disposal of biomedical waste and wastewater.<\/li>\n
    • AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) Approval \u2013 Essential for radiation therapy rooms like LINAC bunkers, which need precise shielding.<\/li>\n
    • Health Department Certification \u2013 To be officially recognised as a cancer care centre.<\/li>\n
    • Lift & Accessibility Licenses \u2013 Ensuring stretcher-sized lifts and wheelchair-friendly ramps.<\/li>\n
    • Fire Safety Approval \u2013 Emergency exits, alarms, sprinklers, and oxygen pipeline safety.<\/li>\n
    • Biomedical Waste Management Compliance \u2013 Proper segregation, storage, and disposal.<\/li>\n
    • Green Building Measures \u2013 Rainwater harvesting, solar energy, and energy-efficient systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Design That Heals<\/h2>\n
      Rules keep hospitals legal and safe \u2014 but design makes them humane. We shared how, at Harshamitra, we focus on:<\/div>\n

      • Placing chemotherapy wards where patients can see sunlight without harsh heat.<\/li>\n
      • Creating waiting areas where families can rest comfortably.<\/li>\n
      • Ensuring wayfinding is simple, so no one feels lost.<\/li>\n
      • Keeping treatment areas close, but never overcrowded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        We told them this: “When you design a cancer hospital, you are not just creating walls and rooms. You are shaping a place of hope. Your design will be part of the treatment itself.”<\/div>\n
        For us at Harshamitra, this talk was more than a lecture \u2014 it was planting a seed in the minds of future architects. We believe that with the right knowledge and compassion, they will create cancer hospitals that are safe, functional, and deeply healing.<\/div>\n
