Colorectal cancer is also known as bowel cancer or colon cancer. It affects the large intestine, which is the final part of our large intestine. In most cases, colon cancer begins as small non-cancerous (benign) lump of cells called adenomatous polyps. Overtime, these polyps proliferate in an abnormal rate to become cancerous. Regular screening and detection can minimize the risk of colorectal cancer. In short, it means removal of these polyps before they become cancerous. Colorectal cancer is more prevalent in people who have high fat and low fibre intake, heredity factors, smoking and alcoholic habits etc.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
1. Change in bowel movements for a period of over 4 weeks.
2. Rectal bleeding
3. Persistent abdominal discomfort
5. Unexplained weight loss
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
Treatment depends on the stages;
STAGES IN COLORECTAL CANCER:
STAGE 1: The cancer has grown in the superficial lining of colon/rectum but not spreaded.
STAGE 2: The cancer has grown into or through the wall of colon/rectum
STAGE 3: The cancer has invaded the nearby lymph nodes, but isn’t affecting the other body parts
STAGE 4: The cancer has spread to distant sites such as other organs for example liver, lungs etc.
Based on the stage either surgery or chemotherapy or radiotherapy will be given. As the stage advances, cure becomes difficult. Hence, early detection is essential.
HOW TO DETECT EARLY?
Do a COLONOSCOPY once in 10 years.
“An ounce of prevention is always is worth a pound of cure”, early stage detection/screening provides a greatest chance for cure. The screening technique used is COLONOSCOPY. Colonoscopy has to be done for people above 50 years and has to be repeated once in 10 years only.
So, do a colonoscopy today and remain fearless for the next 10 years.
*Price includes only the technique charge. Other charges like medicines and anesthesia will be charged (if required).
